Markley (Mark) Noel is the World Record Holder for the longest wooden chain carved from one piece of wood. He completed his wooden chain in August 2009. It was officially measured on October 2, 2009 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA, and awarded the Guinness World Record on October 30. It is 487.5 feet long with 1993 links. Each link is 4 inches long and 1.5 inches wide. The chain is carved from a single plank of maple which was cut from a tree felled on his father's land. The plank was cured for about one year before Mark began carving. Each link was carved individually by hand. The chain has no joints or glued links. Only hand tools were used. The project took nearly 8 years and over 3,000 hours to complete.
Markley Noel lives in Hickory Corners, Michigan, USA.
Each link was carved by hand. There are no joints or glued pieces.
